Alexander Calder
Mercury Fountain
For many years, the world’s greatest source of mercury were the mines at Almadén, Spain, which produced some 250,000 metric tons of mercury over nearly two millennia of operation.
So when Spain decided to build a monument to the mine (which was long worked by criminals and slave laborers, most of whom died of mercury poisoning), they commissioned American sculptor Alexander Calder to build a graceful fountain which, instead of water, would pump pure mercury. It was to be displayed at the 1937 World’s Fair.
At the time, the inherent beauty of the liquid metal was well understood, but its toxicity was not. Today, the fountain resides in the Fundacio Joan Miro in Barcelona, Spain, and continues to pump pure mercury, though now it does so behind a pane of glass to protect viewers from touching or breathing fumes produced by this deadly work of art.

Vicky Form is a Mexican lingerie company that has recently released a campaign called ”New commandments for women.”They read,1. I shall never call another woman a whore.2. No one can convince me from not wearing a condom.3. I shall never get pregnant just to keep a man by my side.4. No one can judge me based on the number of people I’ve slept with.5. Is my responsibility to fight for my own (woman) rights.6. I will not tolerate any kind of violence towards myself.7. I will not fear or be ashamed if I find myself attracted to woman.8. It is my decision if i want to get married or not. (and don’t deserve to be judged for it.)
I find this campaign to be a ‘big deal’ for the fact that is released in Mexico. One of the most sexists, closed minded and underdeveloped countries in the world.
Not so many companies take the risk to make advertisements like this because they’re obviously going to be criticized and possibly be affected by it.Someone is taking the risk, telling the truth, and trying to get to the minds of the people. Sharing the fact that we are all human, and have to be equally treated like it, leading to a better and more developed society. Its a big step for Mexico, and for women.

I absolutely love this campaign! The commandments are fantastic and it is presented wonderfully!

However I question OP’s description of Mexico as one of the most sexist and under-developed countries in the world. Particularly considering its a developing country with flourishing heavy industry and a far more matriarchal set-up in terms of family life than most countries. (Far more matriarchal than North America or the UK certainly!)

I question whether OP has any knowledge of Mexico or Mexican culture at all. Sounds like extreme conjecture to me!
